Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
